An ice rink, a snow games hall, an electric car racing track, a Roman-style theatre and an open-air cinema. This is not a wish list but the contents of Al-Shaheed Park’s third phase, opening on Thursday 1 October.
The numbers
The project covers 243,605 square metres, distributed as follows:
- 190,661 square metres of green space.
- 16,232 square metres for investment activities.
- 2,388 parking spaces.
The remainder, some thirty-six thousand square metres, is buildings and walkways. The source gave another figure for built area that does not reconcile with the total, so we have left it out.
The parking figure is the one that deserves the most attention. Anyone who has visited the park on a Friday evening knows the problem was never the park itself but getting to it.
What will be there
Alongside the above:
- The Sour theatre complex, holding the Roman theatre, the outdoor cinema and a multipurpose hall.
- A women’s health club.
- An ice rink and a museum.
- A flight ride.
- The upper garden.
- A mosque.
- An open-air theatre.
- Outdoor games, a running track and fountains.
- Cafes and shops.
Who announced it
The presentation was given by Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Mishal, undersecretary of the Amiri Diwan, before the Council of Ministers, and covered the project’s final phases. So this is not a leak or a marketing announcement but an official presentation to cabinet.
An opening carnival comes with it, with entertainment programmes, musical performances, light shows and activities for families and children.
What changes on the ground
Al-Shaheed Park today is a place you walk in. The third phase turns it into a place you spend the whole day in: skate, watch a film in the open air, run, pray, eat, then leave.
And what stands out is that most of what has been added is built for the heat: ice skating and a snow games hall are cooled indoor entertainment. The park is trying to stay usable in the months when nobody goes outside.
