The fresh food offers page at the Sultan store carries fifty-six items, each with two prices and a discount rate. The gap between the deepest cut and the shallowest is wide enough to change how you read the page.
The deepest cuts
- Mortadella in its three kinds — plain, olive, pepper — 250g: from 765 fils to 315, fifty-nine per cent off.
- Turkish labneh 250g: from 555 fils to 250.
- Egyptian mango per kilo: from 1.550 to 695 fils.
- Smoked turkey breast 250g: from 1.850 to one dinar.
- South African strawberries 250g: from 1.995 to 995 fils.
And the shallowest
Jam in its varieties — apricot, strawberry and fig, 200g — from 275 fils to 225. That is fifty fils, or eighteen per cent.
The distance between fifty-nine and eighteen is the lesson: “offers” on one page does not mean one rate, and the item sitting next to the heavily cut one may be discounted in name only.
Fruit and vegetables
- Egyptian red grapes per kilo: 1.320 → 795 fils.
- Brazilian Gala apples per kilo: 1.110 → 695 fils.
- Syrian sharha pears per kilo: 1.100 → 695 fils.
- Australian carrots per kilo: 760 fils → 495.
