Bowling in Jakarta: Gold and Silver for One Girl, Bronze for a Pair

An achievement with no precedent for young women at Gulf or Arab level in this sport.

Kuwait’s junior bowling team came out of the twenty-fifth Asian championship in Jakarta with three medals. Fifteen countries took part, and the tournament ran from 23 to 29 August.

The three medals

  • Gold in the masters — girls.
  • Silver in the singles — girls.
  • Bronze in the doubles — boys.

Why the gold is the story

Sharifa Iskandar took the gold and first place in the junior girls’ masters, and the silver in the singles at the same championship. The team’s coach Ayad Al Omairi says this is an achievement with no precedent for women’s entries from the Gulf states and the Arab countries in this sport. So the figure is not a place in a table but a first.

And the bronze

In the junior boys’ doubles, Hussein Qasim and Fahad Al Saqabi took bronze.
