1970 — Kuwait joins the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development
Kuwait approved the convention establishing the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development, which the Council of the Arab League had adopted on 11 March that year.
1979 — A national commission for education, science and culture
The Cabinet created the Kuwait National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, drawing in representatives of the country’s academic and intellectual bodies. It became Kuwait’s channel to UNESCO, ALECSO, ISESCO and the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States.
1980 — Kuwait wins the Asian Cup
The national football team beat South Korea 3-0 in the final of the seventh AFC Asian Cup. It was Kuwait’s first title, and the first time any Arab country had won the tournament. Captain Saad Al-Houti took the trophy from Crown Prince and Prime Minister Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah.
1990 — The Amir addresses the World Summit for Children
Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah appealed to the first World Summit for Children, meeting in New York, to stand with Kuwaiti children living under occupation, and called on delegates to defend the rights guaranteed them by the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
1996 — The Asaad Al-Hamad dermatology centre opens
Health Minister Abdulrahman Saleh Al-Muhailan opened the Asaad Al-Hamad Centre for Skin Diseases, a tertiary specialist centre with outpatient and specialist clinics alongside teaching and training work. It cost 1,570,000 dinars, donated by Khaled Abdullatif Al-Hamad.
1998 — Souq Sharq opens
The Amir opened Souq Sharq as part of the third phase of the master plan for Kuwait’s waterfront. The project covers 55,000 square metres and cost 35 million dinars.
1998 — An English-language radio station goes on air
The foreign service station, Voice of Kuwait in English, began broadcasting, reaching South East Asia, Europe and North America.
2003 — National labour quotas take effect in the private sector
The decision setting national labour quotas in the private sector came into force, applying the percentages the national labour support law had fixed for each sector.
2013 — A first futsal title
Kuwait took the first Gulf futsal championship, beating Qatar 5-1 in the closing match in Doha.
