1945 — Bait Al-Kuwait opens in Cairo
The cultural office of Kuwait’s embassy in Cairo opened, running Kuwait’s study missions in Egypt and supervising Kuwaiti students in Egyptian universities and schools. It was known as Bait Al-Kuwait, and Abdulaziz Hussein ran it.
1969 — A world theatre series begins
The National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters issued the first number of its World Theatre series, publishing plays from abroad. It was renamed Global Creations in November 1998.
1972 — The Kuwait Geographical Society
The Kuwait Geographical Society was formally constituted to advance geographical study and research.
1976 — Kuwait’s first full social insurance law
Law 61 established the country’s first comprehensive social insurance scheme, and created the Public Institution for Social Security under it.
1979 — Kuwait International Airport formally opens
The airport was formally opened, having already been receiving aircraft. Its terminal was designed by the Japanese architect Kenzo Tange.
1980 — The Civil Code
Decree-Law 67 of 1980 issued Kuwait’s Civil Code, still the basic reference for civil dealings in the country.
1995 — Smoking banned in public places
The Ministry of Health brought the public-places smoking ban into force, requiring public and private bodies to set aside designated areas for smokers.
1997 — The new fish market
The new fish market opened on the waterfront beside Souq Sharq.
2002 — The biggest cut to international call rates
The Ministry of Communications began the largest reduction of international call charges in its history, exceeding seventy per cent to some countries and leaving Kuwait with the lowest international rates in the region.

1971 — Walt Disney World opens
The Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida, opened to visitors.
1994 — Palau becomes sovereign
The Republic of Palau formally became a sovereign state.
