1981 — Fahad Al-Ahmad joins the IOC
Sheikh Fahad Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was chosen for the International Olympic Committee by the unanimous vote of the nine members of its executive board.
1982 — The Kuwait Cancer Control Centre starts work
The centre began operating, covering the services for controlling and treating cancer. Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah had opened it that June.
1994 — “Made in Kuwait” at the airline
Kuwait Airways’ director general launched the first output of the corporation’s machinery and equipment development and maintenance project, under the name Made in Kuwait.
1999 — Gold for Arab radio drama
Kuwait took the first gold prize for Arab radio drama at the Tunis festival of the Arab States Broadcasting Union for the programme Nujoom Al-Qimma, and a bronze for a radio reportage.
2001 — First student union election at PAAET
Students at the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training elected their union for the first time. 17,596 students voted for seventeen seats, contested by four lists and an independent.
2003 — Jaber Al-Kuwait marine reserve
The reserve was inaugurated by placing a model of the Dasman gate on the seabed, installing four gates and releasing about four hundred baloul fish. It runs three hundred metres and covers 2,400 square metres.
2005 — The first foreign bank branch
HSBC Bank Middle East Limited opened a branch in Kuwait, the first foreign bank to do so after the licensing rules for foreign banks were eased in 2004.
2010 — Fencing gold in the Gulf
Kuwait’s team won the first Gulf senior fencing championship with ten medals: three golds, four silvers and three bronzes.

The British-American war film had its world premiere, and later won the Academy Award for best picture.
1959 — The Twilight Zone debuts
Rod Serling’s science-fiction anthology series began, and became known for its twist endings and moral lessons.
1967 — Thurgood Marshall joins the Supreme Court
The lawyer and civil rights activist was sworn in as an associate justice of the US Supreme Court, its first African American member.
