Freej Swaileh: Camel Milk on the Menu, and a Branch That Never Shuts

Machboos is six dinars, maqlouba six and a half, and the priciest thing to drink is not a juice.

A herd of camels in open desert

A Kuwaiti restaurant with four branches, and a menu carrying an item you will not find in most: camel milk. Its Salmiya branch advertises hours that do not break.

The branches

Salmiya, Qurain Markets, Mubarakiya and Jahra.

The Salmiya branch is on Salem Al-Mubarak Street, and the restaurant’s site gives its hours as 12 midnight to 11:59 at night — in other words, open around the clock. Phone 1822228.

Prices as they stand on the menu

Boneless lamb machboos at 6 dinars. Swaileh maqlouba at 6.5. Swaileh okra at 4.75.

Chicken and sweetcorn soup at 1.25. The large salad platter at 5 dinars.

Small salads start at 750 fils: green salad, rocket, and mutabbal. The dearest is the prawn salad at 1.5 dinars.

The priciest thing on the table is not a juice

Camel milk: a small bottle at 1.75 dinars, a large one at 2.5. Large farm laban is also 2.5.

Every juice on the menu is one dinar or less. Which means the most expensive drink in the restaurant is milk, not juice.

And the cheapest

Baidan juice at 750 fils, the only one under a dinar. The rest — apple, lemon, lemon with mint, pineapple, orange, pomegranate, kiwi, mango, and banana milk — are a dinar each.

What the restaurant says about itself

Meat from trusted sources, vegetables selected daily, and adherence to ISO standards. That last one is rarely something a popular local restaurant puts on its front.
