Nine halls in Ahmadi, on the ground where Kuwait’s oil industry began. A guided tour every half hour, at no charge, Sunday to Thursday, in Arabic or English, and parking is free. Booking ahead is strongly advised.

The Grand Mosque
Seven time slots for tours, and three different forms depending on who you are. Booking is through the Awqaf site, Sunday to Thursday, in Arabic, English and French, and the visit runs 45 to 90 minutes. Submitting the form is the confirmation unless they call you.

Tareq Rajab Museum
The oldest Islamic art collection in the Gulf, gathered by one family across fifty years, and hidden behind a painted-over wall through the occupation.

Sadu House
The first house in Kuwait built of stone and concrete, in 1936, with doors from Karachi. It became a museum of bedouin weaving.

Salam Palace
A pre-booked guided tour of two hours through three museums in one building, at eight dinars a head. Nobody under twelve is admitted, tickets are sold on the website only, and the dress code is enforced.

What to know before you go
Three questions that keep coming up
Is there a landmark open in the evening?
Yes. The Red Palace in Jahra stays open until eleven at night, and Al Shaheed Park is best visited after sunset in summer.
Where do I get in without paying?
The Amricani Cultural Centre takes no ticket at all, Al Shaheed Park and Kuwait Geopark cost nothing to walk into, and the Ahmad Al Jaber Oil and Gas Exhibition in Ahmadi runs its guided tour free of charge.
Is there anywhere my young child cannot come?
Yes. Salam Palace admits nobody under twelve, and it is a condition of entry rather than advice — arriving with a younger child means not getting in.
Can I buy a ticket at the door?
Not at the Grand Mosque — the tour runs on a booking and a form — and not at Salam Palace, which sells online only and has no counter. Several museums sell online only, so check the post for the place you are going before you drive out.
