Kuwait has a bus network. Reaching it through the official door takes patience. The transport routes page on the Kuwait Public Transport Company website offers a dropdown of twenty-six routes, and when you pick one you do not get a timetable or a list of stops — you get an image carrying the route number.
What is in the list
The numbers are not sequential. There are two-digit routes: 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 21, 23, 34, 39, 40, 41, 51, 59, 66 and 77. There are longer ones: 103, 105, 106, 507, 999 and 1022. And a single route beginning with a letter, A2.
Three numbers appear again with an X in front of them — 102, 106 and 66. The odder detail is that 102 appears in the list only in its X-prefixed form, while sitting next to it in the ordering is a separate route called 1022.
The subscription comes before the ticket
The public transport services page on the same site describes a fleet of more than four hundred buses driven by 1,050 drivers, and says the pricing system is flexible and allows discounts of up to fifty per cent on the subscription system. But the page publishes neither the ticket price nor the subscription price: the percentage is announced, the number it applies to is not.
Figures that carry their own date
The site says the company has carried more than seventy million passengers, but attributes the figure to 2004. In its self-description it gives a workforce of 4,207 and attributes that to a 2016 count. The company itself was founded by Amiri Decree 60 of 1962.
