826.317 tonnes of fish and shrimp, local and imported, entered Kuwait’s markets over forty days. Shrimp nonetheless kept auctioning at Al-Kout market in Ahmadi Governorate for KD 40 to KD 45 a basket.
The breakdown
- Local fish, 1 July to 9 August: 201.450 tonnes.
- Local shrimp, 1 to 9 August: 58.367 tonnes.
- Imported fish: 449.800 tonnes.
- Imported shrimp: 116.700 tonnes.
Why the price held
Hamoud Al-Hamdi, supervisor of Shift A at the East Market, says the local catch is limited because fishing is confined to zones around twelve miles from the shoreline. Note that the figure quoted is a wholesale auction price for a basket, not a per-kilo counter price.
