In Al Rai, across a very large stretch of ground, a market opens every weekend that resembles nothing else in Kuwait. The Friday Market pulls in every part of society at once: people hunting for a bargain, people hunting for antiques, and people who simply want to see what is behind the next table.
It is not a scrap market, whatever its reputation. It is closer to an open museum of other people’s lives. One person comes for a used spare part at a low price; another leaves with a rare object, an old coin, or an instrument that stopped playing years ago.
How it is laid out — which is to say, it is not
The stalls hold electronics, clothes, furniture, building tools, toys and old books, with no system governing where anything sits. That is exactly what gives the place its pull: every visit is a search for something you have not identified yet.
The trade in it
Long-standing sellers and regular customers bargain the traditional way, by experience and by eye rather than by price tag. Alongside them are small traders and young people selling what they own or trying commerce for the first time, which keeps the place turning over.
Why it matters
For all the disorder, the Friday Market carries real cultural weight. It is a social space where class differences dissolve, where old meets new, and where a good number of buyers now photograph what they found for their social accounts.
It is also changing slowly. Some stalls have become organised units, some sellers take electronic payment, and organising it properly as a heritage and tourism site comes up for discussion from time to time.
In its corners things are hidden, and on its tables sit the belongings of people who passed through — objects that turn from scrap into treasure in the eyes of whoever knows what they are looking at.
