Google deletes personal accounts after two years of silence: how to keep yours
A single sign-in resets the clock, but each one on a shared phone needs its own.

Google treats a personal account as inactive if it has not been used for two years, and at that point it may delete the account and everything in it: Gmail, Drive files, Photos and YouTube activity. The policy has been in force since December 2023, the earliest date any account could be removed under it.
What counts as use
Signing in, or doing anything while signed in:
- reading or sending email;
- using Drive, or searching while signed in;
- watching a YouTube video;
- sharing a photo or downloading an app;
- using “Sign in with Google” on another site.
Activity is counted per account, not per device
If three accounts sit on one phone, only the one you actually use is protected. Each needs its own sign-in within the two years, including the backup account and the one you made for an old handset.
What keeps an account alive without a sign-in
- an active subscription to a Google product or service;
- a gift card with a balance on it;
- a published app or game on Google Play with ongoing subscriptions or transactions;
- managing an active child account through Family Link;
- a purchased digital item, such as a book or a film.
The warning goes to your recovery address
Before deleting, Google emails the account itself and its recovery address, if one is set. A recovery address you abandoned years ago means the warning never reaches you.
Three things to do today
- List every Google account you have ever made, old phones included.
- Sign in to each one and check its recovery email.
- For any you no longer need, download your data first, then delete the account yourself.
Work, school and organisation accounts are outside this policy; they follow the rules of whoever created them.
