Kumar in Murouj: biryani sealed in the pot, and black lentils cooked overnight
An Indian kitchen run by a chef who worked in London, with a tandoori chicken machboos and a marag section. Trays for four start at KD 12.

Kumar is an Indian restaurant in Kuwait named after its chef, who according to the menu spent most of his career in London kitchens before bringing his restaurants to Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Oman. Many dishes on the menu carry a place and a year: a duck salad from London’s Chinatown in 2012, biryani balls from a Hyde Park picnic in 2005.
What the menu says about the cooking
- Biryani: the chicken is cooked in spiced chicken stock, then finished with the rice dum style, in a sealed pot where it steams. The short-rib biryani is labelled “Kuwait City, 2012”.
- Dal makhani: black lentils cooked overnight, then enriched with butter and spices.
- Chole bhature: chickpeas in a house masala cooked with tea, served with puffed Indian bread.
- Tandoori prawns: marinated overnight in spices and yoghurt before grilling.
- Kuwaiti tandoori chicken machboos: tandoori chicken over machboos rice.
The online ordering menu also has a section called Marag, alongside one for Pakistani dishes.
