1965 — Interest-free loans for marriage, education and treatment
The Credit and Savings Bank began offering social loans to citizens, for marriage, education, or treatment abroad.
Loans of this kind carried no interest, and the repayment period ran to sixty months at most.
1987 — The psychotropic substances law
The amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah, issued a decree-law on combating psychotropic substances and regulating their use and trade.
1999 — A Jordanian ambassador after nine years
The amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah, received the credentials of Jordan’s ambassador to Kuwait, Mohammad Al Qaraan, after a period of distance between the two countries since 1990.
2001 — The health ministry starts charging for treatment
The Ministry of Health began charging treatment fees to non-Kuwaiti patients not registered in the health insurance or health guarantee system.
2003 — Customs from four to five
Kuwait raised customs duty from 4 to 5 per cent, in line with the unified Gulf customs tariff.
2004 — The death of Mubarak Faleh Rai Al Fahmaa
Mubarak Faleh Rai Al Fahmaa died at the age of about 67, one of the Kuwaiti figures active in political life, elected to the National Assembly in the 1981 and 1985 terms.
2007 — Saturday becomes a day off
The cabinet decision making Saturday a rest day came into effect, closing government and official bodies, schools and universities, alongside Friday.
It replaced the Thursday holiday, which had been set for schools in 1986 and for government bodies in 1995. Which means the weekend Kuwaitis know today dates from here.
2019 — An American patent for water desalination
The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research announced that its water research centre had been granted a patent by the US Patent Office, covering the building of desalination plants with semi-permeable membranes operating at low pressures.
2020 — Two interpellations in the National Assembly
The National Assembly debated two interpellations directed at the minister of education and higher education, Dr Saud Al Harbi, one from MP Al Humaidi Al Subaie and the other from MPs Dr Khalil Abul and Dr Ouda Al Ruwaiei; the minister agreed to merge them.
On the same day the assembly debated an interpellation directed at the deputy prime minister, minister of interior and minister of state for cabinet affairs, Anas Al Saleh, submitted by MP Mohammad Hayef.
Ten MPs filed no-confidence motions over the two interpellations, and both ministers were confirmed in a sitting on 10 September.
