1950 — The Police and Public Security Directorate opens
The Amir, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, opened the building of the Directorate of Police and Public Security beside Nayef Palace in Kuwait City, the seat of the country’s policing before the oil boom.
1954 — Marzouq Al-Daoud Al-Badr dies
Marzouq Al-Daoud Al-Badr died. He sat on the first Shura Council of 1921 and was elected to the Kuwait Municipality council in 1932; he was one of the merchant notables of the Qibla quarter.
1961 — The Arab League force arrives
The first elements of the Arab League force began arriving in Kuwait to guarantee its independence. It drew units from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Sudan and Tunisia under a Saudi commander, numbered about 3,300 men, and made way for the British withdrawal.
1991 — A minister for Amiri Diwan affairs
The Amir, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, issued a decree appointing Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Minister of Amiri Diwan Affairs. He held the post until 7 February 2006, when he became Prime Minister.
2013 — The National Security Bureau changes hands
Sheikh Thamer Al-Ali Al-Sabah took over as president of the National Security Bureau, having been its deputy chief since 1997. He held it until 14 December 2020, when he became Minister of Interior.
2015 — Badr Khaled Al-Badr, Kuwait’s first pilot, dies
Badr Khaled Al-Badr Al-Qinai died at about 103. He earned pilot’s licence no. 6529 at the Hamble flying school near Southampton on 23 May 1934, the first Kuwaiti to hold one. He proposed the official gazette Kuwait Al-Youm and became its first director, then the first under-secretary of information after independence, and later an ambassador.
2016 — Paralympic gold in Rio
Ahmad Al-Mutairi won gold in the men’s 100 m T33 wheelchair race at the Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games, in 16.61 seconds.
2017 — Two awards for the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre
The Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre won best architectural project and best interior design for the Arabia and Africa region at the International Property Awards, in the public buildings category. The prize was received at a ceremony in Dubai.

1974 — Guinea-Bissau becomes independent
Portugal formally recognised the independence of Guinea-Bissau after the Carnation Revolution, ending the war of liberation led by the PAIGC.
2002 — Switzerland joins the United Nations
Switzerland joined the United Nations as its 190th member state, after decades outside the organisation on grounds of neutrality, and the only member to join by popular referendum.
2008 — The first beam in the Large Hadron Collider
The first beam of protons travelled the twenty-seven-kilometre ring of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN — the machine that would find the Higgs boson in 2012.
