1961 — The first law regulating insurance companies
The amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Al Sabah, issued law 24 of 1961 on insurance companies and agents.
The law set out the classes of insurance: life, fire, accident, marine, and capital guarantee. It applied to every insurance company operating in the country, Kuwaiti or foreign.
1964 — Kadhima Sporting Club is registered
Kadhima Sporting Club was registered, with its base in Adailiya, and Ahmad Khaled Al Fawzan as chairman of its board. Among its notable players in that period were Nasser Al Ghanim, Badr Haji, Abdullah Maayouf, Hamoud Fulaiteh and Youssef Sweid.
The club notes on its own site that it was registered on this date under number 31, and that the founding committee chose the name “Kadhima” after the well-known place north of the country.
1969 — The first Kuwaiti ambassador in Sanaa
Kuwait appointed Jassim Mohammad Boursli as its first ambassador to the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.
1973 — The death of the captain Abdullatif Sulaiman Al Othman
Abdullatif Sulaiman Al Othman died at the age of about 106, one of Kuwait’s senior and best-known sea captains, recognised for his navigational skill.
He worked at the trade for thirty-three years, reaching the shores of Shatt Al Arab, the Gulf, India, Zanzibar and the African coast. He was known for charitable work and for building mosques.
1990 — The Arab League demands the population make-up be left untouched
The Arab League council, at its extraordinary session in Cairo, demanded that the Iraqi authorities leave the population make-up of Kuwait untouched, and make no change to the administrative division or the names of places.
The council called on all states and international and regional organisations to refrain from any act or dealing that might be read as implicit acceptance of those measures, and held Iraq responsible for compensating the damage and losses caused by the invasion and occupation.
1997 — A protocol between Kuwait and Kazakhstan
Kuwait and the Republic of Kazakhstan signed a protocol organising relations between the two foreign ministries, to support and develop bilateral relations.
2006 — The youth team takes the tenth Asian handball title
Kuwait’s youth handball team took the tenth Asian championship, held in Hiroshima, beating South Korea 34-28.
The run was unbeaten: wins over Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iran, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China.

1957 — Independence for the Federation of Malaya
The Federation of Malaya gained independence from Britain at a handover ceremony held at midnight. The date is still Malaysia’s national day.
1994 — The IRA announces a complete ceasefire
The Irish Republican Army announced a “complete” cessation of military operations after twenty-five years of bombings and killings.
1997 — Princess Diana dies in a Paris tunnel
Diana, Princess of Wales, died after her car crashed in a tunnel in Paris. The driver and her companion Emad “Dodi” Al Fayed were killed in the same crash.
She was taken to hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning, and surgeons worked for two hours before her death was announced.
