1990 — A housing allowance for Kuwaitis abroad

The Kuwaiti government decided to pay a housing allowance and other allowances to Kuwaitis outside the country during the Iraqi occupation.

1996 — The second Gulf karate championship

The country hosted the second Gulf karate championship for the first time, with 137 competitors from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE. Kuwait won it with 23 medals.

2000 — A committee for voluntary work

The Kuwaiti Committee for Voluntary Work was formed out of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, under the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour, chaired by Sheikha Amthal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah.

2005 — Half a billion for Katrina’s victims

Kuwait gave the United States 500 million dollars towards recovery from Hurricane Katrina in three southern states: Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

2006 — Tourism and intellectual property move ministry

The deputy amir and crown prince, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, issued a decree transferring the tourism sector and the intellectual property affairs department from the Ministry of Information to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, with both units continuing to exercise their functions under the existing regulations and decisions until those were amended or replaced.

2016 — A European certificate for nuclear medicine

The nuclear medicine department at the Kuwait Cancer Control Centre was awarded the European quality certificate — the first the department had received at Gulf and Middle East level.

2018 — The first flare at Mina Abdullah

Kuwait National Petroleum Company lit the first permanent flare of the clean fuels project at Mina Abdullah refinery.

2021 — The death of Shafeeq Al Ghabra

Dr Shafeeq Al Ghabra died at the age of sixty-eight. He was professor of political science at Kuwait University and held several academic posts.
