1961 — Pensions for military retirees
A decree-law issued by the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Al Sabah, came into force, covering the pensions and gratuities of military retirees from the army and the armed forces.
1977 — The end of the American Independent Oil Company’s concession
The Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al Salem Al Sabah, issued a decree-law ending the concession granted to the American Independent Oil Company under the agreement dated 28 June 1948.
All rights, funds, assets, facilities and operations relating to the concession passed to the state, refining facilities among them.
1991 — The Kuwaiti Women’s Voluntary Society is registered
The Kuwaiti Women’s Voluntary Society for Community Service was registered, its aim being to encourage voluntary work by Kuwaiti women, to prepare volunteers through training seminars, and to run model nurseries.
1995 — The death of Khalifa Al Ghanim
Khalifa Khaled Al Ghanim died at the age of seventy-four. He was the first Kuwaiti to graduate from the American University of Beirut, a founder of the National Bank of Kuwait, and Kuwait’s first ambassador to Britain.
He held the trade portfolio from 28 January 1963 to 28 December 1964.
1996 — A licence before any factory
The Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, issued an industry law applying to every industrial establishment and trade in the country.
The law bars the setting up of any new industrial establishment or trade without a licence from the Public Authority for Industry, and requires registration in the industrial register before production begins.
1997 — Failaka’s antiquities move
The transfer of rare antiquities from the Failaka Museum to the Kuwait National Museum began, to preserve them after the damage they suffered in the Iraqi invasion of 1990.
2003 — A unanimous Arab condemnation
For the first time since the Iraqi invasion of 1990, the Arab states unanimously condemned the violations committed by Saddam Hussein’s regime against the Iraqi people and Kuwaiti nationals, among them the killing of Kuwaiti prisoners and detainees. It came in a resolution of the Arab foreign ministers at the close of their meeting in Cairo.
2007 — Al Watan Television begins satellite broadcasting
The Crown Prince, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, patronised the ceremony launching the official satellite broadcast of Al Watan Television, part of the Kuwait Media Group company.
2014 — Kuwait named a centre for humanitarian work
At United Nations headquarters in New York, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon granted the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, the title of Humanitarian Leader, and the United Nations named the State of Kuwait a centre for humanitarian work.

1991 — Tajikistan’s independence
Tajikistan declared independence from the Soviet Union as it broke up.
2015 — The longest reign in Britain
Queen Elizabeth II passed Queen Victoria’s record to become the longest-reigning monarch in British history.
