1968 — Kuwait joins the Arab Labour Organization
Kuwait joined the Arab Labour Organization, the first specialised Arab body for labour affairs under the League of Arab States. The organization’s own membership register gives 1968 as the year; the exact day comes from the KUNA bulletin.
1993 — The housing care law creates the authority
Law 47 of 1993 on housing care was issued at Bayan Palace, signed by Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. Its first article creates the Public Authority for Housing Welfare with an independent budget and legal personality; article 37 repealed Laws 30 of 1965 and 15 of 1974.
2003 — Two swimming titles for Kuwait in Dammam
Kuwait’s swimming team took both the senior and junior titles at the fifteenth GCC swimming championship in Dammam. The only source is KUNA’s bulletin for this day.
2014 — The Jeddah Communiqué
The Jeddah Communiqué was issued by ministers representing the GCC states, Kuwait among them, alongside Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and the United States, committing to confront ISIS and to implement Security Council resolution 2170. The official text names the GCC collectively and does not name Kuwait separately.
2018 — The death of Ibrahim Al-Shatti
Ibrahim Mohammad Al-Shatti, undersecretary of the Amiri Diwan at ministerial rank, died at eighty-six after some fifty-one years at the Diwan. He joined in 1967 at the request of Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem and ran Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad’s office from 1967 to 2006.
2025 — Emad Al-Ateeqi dies
Dr Emad Mohammad Al-Ateeqi, deputy prime minister and former oil minister, died. He sat on the Supreme Petroleum Council from 1990 to 2013, was dean of Kuwait University’s College of Engineering and Petroleum from 1998 to 2000, and took the ministry on 17 January 2024 until his resignation was accepted on 8 September 2024.

1990 — Bush sets the terms for Iraq’s exit from Kuwait
Forty days after the invasion, US President George H. W. Bush told a joint session of Congress that Iraq must withdraw from Kuwait completely, immediately and unconditionally, and that Kuwait’s legitimate government must be restored. The same speech introduced the phrase “a new world order”.
2001 — The September 11 attacks
Nineteen al-Qaeda members hijacked four American passenger aircraft. Flight 11 struck the North Tower at 8:46 and Flight 175 the South Tower at 9:03; a third aircraft hit the Pentagon and a fourth came down in a Pennsylvania field. 2,977 people from ninety countries were killed.
2020 — Bahrain and Israel agree to open relations
King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to open a phase of cooperation under the Abraham Accords, followed by the peace declaration signed in Washington on 15 September and the statement establishing diplomatic relations in Manama on 18 October.
