1980 — An explosion at the offices of Al-Rai Al-Aam
An explosion struck the offices of the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai Al-Aam, killing one person and injuring six, with damage estimated at some six million dinars. 2012 — Three million dollars from Kuwait against malaria
Kuwait pledged three million dollars to fight malaria worldwide, through a grant to the secretariat of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership. The source is KUNA’s bulletin republished by a third party; no statement from the partnership itself confirms the sum.
2020 — Forty-four tonnes reach Khartoum
The first aircraft of the Kuwaiti air bridge landed at Khartoum airport carrying some forty-four tonnes of food, medicine, medical supplies and shelter material for those hit by flooding in Sudan. The flight belonged to the Kuwait Red Crescent Society; Sudan had declared a three-month state of emergency on 5 September.
2021 — The Sahel app launches in beta
The Minister of Public Works and Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, Rana Al-Fares, announced the trial release of the first phase of the unified government app Sahel on the Apple and Google stores, to watch its performance and gather users’ comments before the official release.
2023 — Free filtered water in restaurants
The Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mohammad Al-Aiban, issued a decision barring restaurants and cafés from requiring a customer to buy bottled water when ordering food, and requiring them to serve state water free on request, with a filter fitted to the official specifications.
2024 — Afya health cover for retirees stops
The Ministry of Health announced it had terminated its contract with the company running the Afya health insurance scheme for retired citizens, with the service stopping the same day, after the company refused to continue on the same terms and prices on renewal. The ministry cited Law 114 of 2014 and Law 71 of 2023 and said it would sue for compensation.

1974 — Emperor Haile Selassie is deposed
The committee of officers known as the Derg deposed Ethiopia’s emperor Haile Selassie after some forty-four years on the throne. A struggle inside the Derg then ended with about sixty leaders executed that November, among them the council’s chairman General Aman Andom. Haile Selassie died in Addis Ababa in August 1975.
1980 — A military coup in Turkey
Turkey’s chief of general staff Kenan Evren carried out a military coup, dissolving parliament, suspending the constitution, declaring martial law, banning the parties and removing Süleyman Demirel’s government. 517 death sentences followed, of which 50 were carried out. In 2015 Evren was sentenced to life, but died before his appeal concluded.
2003 — Sanctions on Libya are lifted
The UN Security Council adopted resolution 1506, lifting the sanctions imposed on Libya by resolutions 748 of 1992 and 883 of 1993, with thirteen votes in favour and France and the United States abstaining. The sanctions had covered arms sales, air links and some oil equipment.
