1973 — Nakhoda Nasser Abdullatif bin Issa dies
Nasser Abdullatif bin Issa, one of Kuwait’s best-known nakhodas — the master of a pearling and trading dhow — died at 84. He took his first boom to India in 1917, then commanded the baghla known as Princess of the Seas until 1946.
1986 — The Kuwaiti tanker Fintas is attacked off Khafji
The Kuwaiti oil tanker Fintas was attacked 35 nautical miles east of Khafji, and fire broke out in one of her aft tanks. Kuwaiti shipping was a repeated target in those years.
1990 — Kuwait made a vice-president of the IAEA General Conference
Kuwait was elected one of eight vice-presidents of the 34th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which opened in Vienna. The country was under occupation at the time.
1992 — The actress Aisha Ibrahim dies at forty-eight
Aisha Ibrahim, among the first prominent Kuwaiti actresses, died at 48. She worked with the Arab Theatre, the Popular Theatre and Gulf Theatre companies, helped found Al-Masrah Al-Hurr in 1974, first appeared on television in 1963, and left more than thirty-seven stage and screen works.
2001 — Clinics move from paper files to electronic records
Health Minister Dr Mohammad Al-Jarallah launched the electronic patient file in Kuwait’s polyclinics, replacing the paper files that had governed every visit.
2006 — Jassem Hamad Al-Sagar dies at eighty-eight
Jassem Hamad Al-Sagar died at 88. Born in 1918, he took a law degree at Baghdad University in 1943, ran the family’s trading business in Basra until 1959, and afterwards sat on a number of Kuwaiti institutions and public bodies in the years after independence.

1948 — Count Folke Bernadotte is assassinated in Jerusalem
Count Folke Bernadotte, the Swedish diplomat chosen in 1947 as the first United Nations mediator, was assassinated while on his mission in Jerusalem, together with the French officer Colonel André Serot. The Security Council had asked him to mediate a truce in the Arab-Israeli conflict.
1991 — Seven states join the United Nations on one day
The United Nations admitted seven members at once: the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the Republic of Korea, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Marshall Islands and Micronesia. Kuwait had joined on 14 May 1963.
