1957 — The Kuwait Olympic Committee is founded
The football, basketball, volleyball, athletics and cycling federations together founded the Kuwait Olympic Committee.
1971 — Relations with Mauritania
Kuwait established diplomatic relations with Mauritania at ambassador level.
1984 — The twenty-dinar note
Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah issued a decree authorising the Central Bank of Kuwait to issue a new twenty-dinar banknote.
1994 — The poet Abdullah Al-Duwaish dies
Abdullah Al-Duwaish, one of Kuwait’s leading popular poets, died aged seventy-three. He wrote Nabati verse, zuhayriyat and mawwal, and was a founder of the Kuwaiti Artists Society and the Writers’ League.
1999 — Kuwait welcomes home a round-the-world sailor
The Yacht Club held a public celebration, under the Amir’s patronage, for the return of nokhada Ghanim Abdullah Al-Othman, the first Gulf Arab to sail around the world. The voyage took a year and a half, covered 34,000 nautical miles and called at more than thirty countries and islands, in a boat 46 feet long.
1999 — An honour for actress Maryam Al-Ghadban
The National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters honoured actress Maryam Al-Ghadban at its third theatre season for her service to Kuwaiti theatre.
2012 — An award for Kuwait University’s medical school
Kuwait University’s Faculty of Medicine won the Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Award for Medical Sciences as the best medical faculty in the Arab world.
