1976 — the decree that created KUNA

The Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, issued a decree-law establishing the Kuwait News Agency. Burges Hamoud Al-Burges was appointed chairman and director general, and stayed in the post until January 1992.

1982 — the health minister questioned in the National Assembly

The Assembly debated an interpellation brought by member Khalifa Talal Al-Jiri against the minister of public health, Dr Abdulrahman Al-Awadi, during the second session of the fifth legislative term. It sought a list of the patients the state had sent abroad for treatment, and the treatment each received. The minister refused to hand over the data and referred the matter to the Constitutional Court, which upheld his position.

1994 — Iraqi forces massed on the Kuwaiti border

The Iraqi regime moved troops up to the Kuwaiti border in an attempt to revive the crisis it had manufactured on 2 August 1990, when it occupied Kuwait. Kuwait answered diplomatically rather than militarily; states around the world responded to its appeal, and Arab and allied countries lined up behind the Kuwaiti case.

2009 — Kuwait joins ice hockey’s world body

Kuwait joined the International Ice Hockey Federation as its sixty-seventh member.

2012 — the judo team takes a sixteenth Gulf title

Kuwait’s judo squad won the sixteenth Gulf championship with twenty-nine medals, twenty-two of them gold.
