Most cafes buy their coffee already roasted. 48 East roasts its own — and also sells the equipment it roasts on to anyone who wants to do the same.
The machine
The roastery runs on Giesen equipment from the Netherlands. The evidence comes from Giesen itself, whose account posted a video from the 48 East roastery in Kuwait and named it. 48 East is in turn the Kuwait retailer for Giesen roasters — from the sample machine up through the W1, W6, W15A and W30A — alongside Roest sample roasters and the Nucleus Link.
Which model it uses for its own production is not published.
The coffee
Its own description says the green is sourced from Yemen, Kenya, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Peru and Brazil. From the current list, in dinars:
- Bani Ismail, Yemen — 11.000
- Laurina, Brazil, 100g — 8.500
- Maguta Amber H3, Kenya — 7.750
- Yirgacheffe Chelchele, Ethiopia, espresso roast — 6.000
- Decaf, Colombia — 6.000
- Bossa Nova, Brazil — 5.000
- La Margarita Geisha, Peru, 100g — 5.500
Where and when
Three locations are listed on its site: Shuwaikh Industrial at 77 68 Street, block 70050; Salmiya on Salem Al Mubarak Street; and a counter at Lothan Hospital. Shuwaikh and Salmiya are given as 7am to 11pm, Lothan as 8am to 10pm.
Google Maps lists the Shuwaikh branch closing at 11pm and the Salmiya branch as open around the clock. The founding year is not published on any of its channels.
