Garmin has revealed the ninth generation of its flagship sports watch: the Fenix 9, and with it the higher Fenix 9 Pro. The number that sums the device up is how long it stays away from a charger.
The battery first
In ordinary smartwatch mode the Fenix 9 reaches twenty-nine days in its largest size, and the Pro reaches thirty-one days despite its bigger screen. The solar-charging versions reach fifty-seven days.
Sizes and screen
Three case sizes: 43, 47 and 51 millimetres. The screen is AMOLED and twice as bright as the previous generation, reaching 3,000 nits on the Pro. The 51mm Pro carries the first 1.5-inch AMOLED panel, about fifteen per cent wider than the Fenix 8 without the case itself growing.
Water
The watch is rated for diving to forty metres, its buttons are sealed against ingress, and its glass is scratch-resistant sapphire.
What is new in the measurements
- Endurance: endurance zones and an endurance curve that track how much you have left during an effort.
- Indoor rowing: maximum oxygen uptake measurement and a power curve.
- Rucking: a pack weight set manually up to a hundred kilograms, with ready-made workouts.
- Visual recap: a feature gathering several activities into one shareable story.
Maps and storage
Fifty per cent more RAM, thirty per cent faster map panning, and a tilted perspective rather than the overhead view alone. Storage is 64GB — double the map space of the previous generation — and holds seven thousand songs. The Pro has a built-in torch to which a green light has been added, plus satellite and 4G connectivity options for emergencies and location.
Price
The Fenix 9 starts at $999.99 and the Pro at $1,099.99, both available now in the company’s markets.
