The Minister of Education, Eng. Sayed Jalal Al-Tabtabai, has approved a new course-credit system for the secondary stage, known as the Tracks system, beginning with the 2026/2027 academic year. It is optional: the existing secondary system continues unchanged for anyone who does not take it.
How it is built
- Three academic years across six semesters.
- Fifty-four credit units.
- Grade 10 is a shared foundation year containing two Exploration experiences.
- One hundred and twenty hours of field training and community service, plus a graduation project.
- Up to nine units in the summer semester, and early graduation is possible after five semesters.

- Law.
- Social sciences.
- Commercial.
- Mathematics.
- Sciences.
- Industrial.
- Technology and artificial intelligence.
What has not been announced
The decision number has not been published, and neither have the names of the twelve pilot schools — one boys’ and one girls’ school in each educational region — nor the unit breakdown for each track, nor what the two Exploration experiences contain. Registration and academic tracking run on an electronic platform called Masar.
