Renewing your car registration: insurance first, inspection next, then Sahel

Kuwait’s General Traffic Department has set out how to renew a vehicle’s registration, the booklet most drivers call the daftar, without going to a traffic office. Every step is online except the technical inspection, which still means taking the car in.

The steps, in order

  1. Third-party insurance. Go to the Beema website, choose an insurer, pay online and print the policy.
  2. Technical inspection. Take the car to the inspection section that covers the home address on your Civil ID. Not just any centre: it has to be yours.
  3. Renew in Sahel. Once the car passes and the result is approved, open the Sahel app, then Ministry of Interior, then Traffic services, then Vehicle licence renewal. Pick the vehicle, tap Continue and pay.

The paper booklet can stay at home

The department says the digital registration in the Kuwait Mobile ID app (Hawyti in Arabic) is enough. You no longer have to keep the paper booklet in the car.

If your paper booklet is torn or faded and you want a new one, that is a “damaged replacement” and costs KD 5. Our guide to replacement booklets and vehicle records has the paperwork.
