Galaxy Buds Become a Hearing Aid: The Clearance Is American, and Kuwait Is Not Named

The wireless earbuds in your pocket may turn into a medical device. That is what Samsung announced, and it is true — but the details that usually go unpublished are what decide whether the news concerns you.

What the American regulator actually approved

The US Food and Drug Administration granted the “hearing aid” feature in Galaxy Buds a 510(k) clearance, meaning a finding that the device is substantially equivalent to a previously cleared one. The file number is K261187, the decision date 31 July 2026, and the recorded outcome “substantially equivalent”.

The company did not announce it until 11 August, eleven days after the clearance. The information is available to anyone in the administration’s own database, not in the press release.

Two features, not one

• Hearing test. Registered as software as a medical device. It is self-administered from the settings menu in about five minutes, using pure-tone audiometry, testing each ear separately, and producing an audiogram. The result classes hearing as normal or in one of four degrees: mild, moderate, severe, profound.
• Hearing aid. It amplifies high frequencies, whispers and distant sounds according to the personal hearing profile, and uses noise cancellation and directional pickup toward whoever is in front of you. The fitting formula used is NAL-NL2, the international standard formula for fitting prescription hearing aids.

The conditions that cannot be waved away

Here the wording has to be carried across rather than simplified. The feature is for people who are eighteen or older, with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. And Samsung states plainly that it is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a specialist.

So for anyone with real difficulty hearing, the route remains an audiology clinic, not a settings menu.

And what about Kuwait

This is the part that usually drops out of the coverage. The clearance is American, and the FDA’s authority does not extend to Kuwait.

Samsung defines availability like this: both features on Galaxy Buds 3 Pro and Buds 4 Pro only, in the United States and other approved markets, in the final quarter of 2026. Kuwait is not named. A compatible Galaxy device running One UI 8 or newer is also required.

Which means owning the earbuds does not automatically mean the feature will appear for you.

And it was not the only clearance

In the same database there is another Samsung clearance from days earlier: the sleep apnoea feature, second version, file K261011, dated 20 July 2026.

For context, the World Health Organization estimates that more than 1.5 billion people live with some degree of hearing loss, and that the figure could reach 2.5 billion by 2050.
