On the mezzanine of Thuraya Mall in Salmiya there is a pottery studio with two doors: one for anyone who wants to try it for an hour or two, and one for anyone who wants a full course. The gap in price between them is wide.
The cheapest door: fifteen dinars, no instructor
The item is called the self-guided pottery experience: one kilogram of clay, one piece of your choosing, and no instructor. The studio team fires the piece afterwards.
The price is 15 dinars, the lowest on the list.
With an instructor
A guided adult session is 25 dinars, with some instructors listed at 26. A child’s session on the wheel is 23 dinars.
Hand-building for adults is 25 dinars: an hour and a half in which you work through three techniques — pinch, slab building and coiling. Age thirteen and above.
The courses
Two days on the wheel (Sunday and Monday) — 55 dinars.
Four-day beginners course (Sunday to Wednesday) — two hours a day, four finished pieces, covering trimming and underglaze colouring. 95 dinars, age thirteen and above.
Private wheel lessons (Sunday to Thursday) — five sessions with two more free, so seven days at two hours a day, six pieces, with one-to-one instruction. 150 dinars.
And one item that has nothing to do with learning
The list includes a private birthday party package at 240 dinars, the most expensive thing on the page.
A number worth noticing
The firing service on its own is 35 dinars — more than the entire self-guided session, and the self-guided session already includes firing.
So anyone bringing in a piece they made at home to have it fired pays more than someone who comes in, makes a piece there, and has it fired.
